Editorial Introduction

This microfilm project reveals rich new sources for the historian of the industrial era. High-grade but little-used materials are offered in regard to International Trade, Manufacturing Industry, Scientific and Technological Development, Banking and Finance, Railway Communications, Agriculture and Retailing.

Economic and business history, along with the study of parallel developments in commerce, trade and finance, have attracted much attention in recent years. Among the discoveries that have followed is the recognition that a wealth of historical evidence remains locked up in the bewildering array of contemporary journals published during Britain’s period of industrial and trade expansion. These are the specialist publications of skilled trades, commercial associations, professional bodies and economic interest groups.

The problem for the researcher or student has lain in identifying and finding these sources. Until now, the availability of such material in microform has not been extensive; and there have been many gaps in coverage. In this project, Adam Matthew Publications sets out to rectify these deficiencies and to supply a wide and balanced microform selection of these valuable contemporary sources.
