(6) Canals

To provide useful background information, two maps have been reproduced here from the Catalogue of Old Engines.

The first map is an item from the case documents for the Bill of 1806 to obtain consent from Parliament "for removing the Bar between Birmingham, and the Birmingham and Worcester Canals". It shows a plan of part of the Birmingham canal with proposed extensions. It also shows the location of the Bradley Works, Broad Waters, Bloomfield, Smethwick, Darlaston and other locations in relation to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Walsall. It demonstrates the importance of canals in this region.

The second map shows the canal system in the Midlands centered upon Birmingham, reaching down to Oxford, London, Gloucester and Bristol in the south, and up to Stafford, Derby, and the Potteries further nothwards, then Manchester and Liverpool beyond.

It shows the following:

Birmingham Canal

Birmingham & Fazeley Canal

Coventry Canal

Dudley Canal

Droitwich Canal

Grand Junction Canal

Grand Trunk Canal

Napton Canal

Oxford Canal

Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal

Stourbridge Canal

Stratford and Avon Canal

Warwick and Birmingham Canal

Worcester Canal

Wyrley Canal
