The collection was donated to the Library in numerous instalments by Harold and Gertrude (Jean) Williams between 1978 and 1995.

The collection includes subject files, correspondence, scrapbooks, articles, lectures, notes, drafts of works by Williams, drafts of works by others, photographs, programs and other papers relating to the history of foreign settlement in Japan and its influence on, and adaptation to, Japanese society. The papers also relate to Japanese culture, individual expatriate residents, other foreigners, foreign businesses, communities and clubs in Japan until the 1980s. These papers contain the primary material used by Williams in his many published books and articles.

Also included are the papers of Gertrude Williams and personal and family papers that document Harold Williams’ life and the life of both Harold and Gertrude Williams in Japan.


The Guide to the Papers of Harold S Williams in the National Library of Australia was compiled by Corinne Collins (© National Library of Australia 2000) and this is also available on the Library’s website.
