Regions Beyond/Horizons
Issues of the mission’s magazine or journal usually published quarterly or bi-monthly. In 1884 it was published as The Regions Beyond and Illustrated Missionary News, from 1888 it absorbed F B Meyer’s Worship and Work. During the two world wars it sometimes appeared as a Newsletter, for a time after the Second World War it included a special Australian section, and from 1981 it was called Horizons.

Early volumes refer to news of Harley students and RBMU missionaries but also to the work of other missions, particularly in Africa including the Sudan, and in China; later volumes concentrate on RBMU work with lists of missionaries in each field; volumes sometimes contain accounts and annual reports; most issues contain high quality maps, engravings (early issues) and photographs and frequently sections for children; sometimes special issues were produced to commemorate deaths or anniversaries or concentrated on particular mission fields; volumes until the 1930s were usually indexed.

An early issue comments:

“The main object of our paper is, as its title indicates, to convey to our readers tidings from the ‘Regions Beyond,’ and to report what Harley House and Hulme Cliff College are seeking to do on their behalf.”

Early volumes include accounts of:

  • The Livingstone Inland Mission, Congo
  • Missions in Zulu territories, South Africa
  • Harley House
  • East African Missions and Nyasa
  • Work in Bombay and Nanking, China
  • Accounts of Bedouin tribesmen
  • Lebanon and Syria
  • Jamaica
  • Work in Marseilles
  • Nova Scotia
  • New Zealand
  • Central and North West Africa
  • Cameroons
  • Tanganyika

The RBMU set of Regions Beyond is not complete and there are some pages and issues missing. We have been able to fill a number of these gaps (including issues for 1878-1879 and 1883 on this reel) with issues filmed at the British Library.
