24. 1814 - AL in third person from Miss [Maria] Edgeworth, Edgeworth's Town, Ireland to the Editor of the Monthly Review [Mr Griffiths] 12 June 1814. With draft of reply, 27 July 1814. This letter appears to have been written following the publication of a review of Edgeworth's Patronage (1814) in the Monthly Review. She thanks him for the corrections to her 'gross errors' in Patronage which she will put right in the next edition. She queries his criticism of her use of the word 'excite' and asks him to make allowances for some of her errors because of 'her distance from the Press which has deprived her of the advantage of seeing proof sheets'. She concludes with a comment from her father [Richard Lovell] Edgeworth 'that the monitory yet kind tone of the review put him in mind of his excellent old friend Mr Griffiths' [father of the recipient] with whom he has passed happy hours'. The draft reply, dated 17 July 1814, was written from T[urnham] Green, although a note indicates that the reply was sent from Rye on 7 August. He firstly expresses surprise that there was no proof checking of her work and then refers in some detail to the friendship between Mr Edgeworth and the late Dr Griffiths.

28. 1817 - ALS from Maria Edgeworth, Edgeworth Town to Mr [Rowland] Hunter, St Paul's Church, London, 17 August 1817. This letter, addressed formally - 'Dear Sir' - to her publisher, firstly relates to a misunderstanding with regard to the despatch of some songs for a friend. These had been directed to Gen[era]l Airey at the request of her friend but, because of heavy and unexpected charges incurred for the delivery the parcel had not been released from the post office. Edgeworth asks for two more copies of the songs to be sent to Alex[ande]r Mangin, Castle, Dublin, who has been appointed as successor to Mr W Tay for the receipt of her parcels. She asks for the name of the author of 'the pretty little book Dialogues on Botany' which she had received in a previous parcel from Hunter, so that she may send her thanks for the gift. She also asks for a list of the contents of the packet sent to Airey and expresses hope that Cambridge's life was not in it. As a postscript, she gives news of Lovell [her brother] who 'has been much benefited by sea water'.
29. 1819 - ALS from Maria Edgeworth to D[avid] Wilkie (1785-1841, painter), Phillamore Place, Kensington [London], 14 Sept[ember] 1819. Relates to her engravings and includes instructions regarding the 'placing of the plates' of both 'the knave & slave' and 'the thief and his witness'. She also offers the services of her sisters 'who sketch well enough to execute for you any sketch from the life you might wish for'.
30. 1841 - ALS from Maria Edgeworth, 1 North Audley Street addressed to 'Dear Sir', 27 April 1841. With typescript transcript. 2pp. A detailed letter providing introductions for the recipient into American society. For example, she encloses for him a letter to a Mr and Mrs Ticknor 'who will do all you wish both in the best literary and best mannerd society in Boston'. A letter to Mr and Mrs Cruger 'will introduce you to a certain set of society in New York that you may perhaps be curious to see' and she offers to write on his behalf to Marchioness Wellesley, if her sister, Lady Camarthaen, does not provide him with a letter of introduction as promised. She also encloses a letter to Gerard Ralstone, her oldest friend amongst the Ralstones. At the end of the letter, Edgeworth appears to identify her correspondent as a Mr Powell: 'it is a pleasure and satisfaction to me to do any how the least service in my power to you as Lerlocke W[al]dron's friend and as the son of his friend and partner Mr Horsley Palmer'.
31. n.d. [early 20th cent] - ALS from Maria Edgeworth to Doctor Somerville [?William Somerville (1771-1860, physician]. Letter of invitation to accompany a party, which was to include Capt[ai]n Beaufort [?Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), rear-admiral and hydrographer] and Capt[ai]n and Mrs Kater, to unspecified venue. Notes referred to about the expedition have not survived.
