Detailed Listing

REEL 1

Sources from the National Library of Scotland

Adv Ms 32.4.4

COVENANTERS Early 18th c. copies of letters and memoirs of Covenanters.

(i) Letters, 1675-7, of the Preacher John Welwood. They are mostly addressed to Elizabeth Collace and her sister Katherine Ross, but there are also a few to the Covenanter Richard Cameron. The letters, which are not in strict chronological order, are chiefly religious in nature, but there are occasional mentions of the persecutions in Fife, the Morse and Teviotdale.
(f 1).

(ii) Memoirs of Katherine Ross (published Edinburgh, 1735). The MS does not differ greatly from the printed text except in the inclusion of a note identifying one of the characters as the Minster of Auldearn (f 35v). It includes another note which appears in the printed text, where the author had left a blank in her original MS (f 66). See also Adv MS 34.5.19, ff 185-284 which is closely related (f 27).

(iii) Notes by Jean Collace on the deaths of her sisters Katherine and Elizabeth in 1697 and 1704. Those concerning Katherine form the basis of the first part of the epilogue in her printed Memoirs (f 79).

(iv) ‘Some short remembrances of the Lord’s kindness to me, and his work on my soul for my own use ’ being a religious memoir by Jean Collace. Most of it refers to the period 1675-6, and it occasionally mentions the family’s moments in Fife and Morayshire, the conventicles and persecutions, and the texts of the field-preachers sermons (f 79v).

Sections ii-iv are in the same hand. iii + 126 ff Quarto.

Adv Ms 34.5.19

COVENANTERS Early 18th c. copies of autobiographies and other works of Covenanters.

Autobiography of John Livingstone, minister of Ancrum. It has been published from the version in Wodrow MS Quarto XVIII by William & Tweedie in Select Biographies (Wodrow Society, Edn, 1845-7) i, pp 129-97. This MS has few variants from the printer version, (f 1).

(ii) “An account of what past when Mr John Livingstone appeared before the Councill house at Edinburgh” 11 Dec 1662. cf Select Biographies, i, pp 215-21 (f 51).

(iii) “Some expressions of Mr John Livingstone... a little before his death ye 9 August 1672” cf Select Biographies, i, pp 290-1, and Wodrow MS Quarto XVIII, f85 (f 55v).

(iv) Sermon of Livingstone at Ancrum, 13 Oct 1662, cf Select Biographies, i, pp 201-12 and Wodrow Ms Quarto. XXVII, no 17 (f 56v)

(v) Letter of Livingstone to his parish, 3 Apr 1663. cf Select Biographies i. pp 225-9 (f 64).

(vi) Sayings of Livingstone cf Select Biographies, i, pp 279-86 (f 67).

(vii) Extracts from Robert McWard’s ETTXRWVIAMOI; or, Earnest Contendings for the Faith. The pagination noted in the margins does not agree with that of the 1723 edition (f 73).

(viii) Not used.

(ix) Memoirs of James Fraser of Brea, Minister of Culross. Although related to Fraser’s published memoirs (Select Biographies ii, pp 85-370), it is not the same. It chiefly concerns Fraser’s spiritual life, but also mentions his various trials and his imprisonment on the Bass Rock. These appear to have been several lacunae in the original manuscript from which this was copied (f 119).

(x) Notes of sermons and pious reflections of Sir Archibald Johnstone, Lord Warriston, Jan-Mar 1650. They do not appear in David May Fleming’s edition of Warriston’s diary (Scottish History Society, 2nd series, 18; Edinburgh, 1919) (f 169).

(xi) Memoirs of Katharine Ross (published Edinburgh, 1735). For another closely related manuscript of this and sections xii-xiii, see Adv Ms 32.4.4, ff 27-126. This copy includes the note (f 194) identifying the minister of Auldearn (f 185).

(xii) Notes by Jean Collace on the deaths of her sisters Katharine and Elizabeth in 1697 and 1704. See Adv Ms 32.4.4 f 79 (f 238).

(xiii) “Some short remembrances of the Lord’s kindness to me and his work on my soul for my own use”, by Jean Collace. See Adv Ms 32.4.4.,

f 79v (f 238v).
ii + 284 ff Octavo.

Anne Lady Halkett’s Meditations.

Anne Lady Halkett was a daughter of a cadet of the Murray of Tullibardine family and lived from 1622-1699. She was the second wife of Sir James Halkett of Pitfirrane who died in 1670. Lady Halkett was a royalist and author of religious meditations. There are now extant fourteen bound volumes of the ‘Meditations’, out of a series of twenty-one, viz. numbers
v-vii, ix-x, xii-xiii, xv-xxi according to the numbering in an appendix to The Life of the Lady Halkett, Edinburgh, 1901. The dedication of this work is signed ‘S.C.’, and it is probably by Simon Couper, a Dunfermline minister who knew Lady Halkett well (see MS 6502, pp 226-9).

Apart from religious reflections the volumes were used as a diary and contain thoughts of the writer on historical events, eg the Popish Plot of 1678, as well as comments on her financial troubles consequent on the Civil War and later widowhood. The volumes present here were written from the middle of the seventeenth century until the death of the writer. The other seven volumes were already missing in 1870 when John Gough Nichols was editing the text of The Autobiography of Anne Lady Halkett, Camden Society, 1875. Loose papers relative to each volume have been bound in at the beginning or end and paginated in Roman numerals.

Authorship and other details are given in a note at the beginning of the manuscript, dated 24 Dec 1890, in the hand of William, 3rd Earl of Minto which reveals that Elizabeth Bell used to dress up and act the part of Tibbie Flint at Minto House. Her connection with the family was through friendship with Mary, Countess of Minto, to whom many of the sketches are addressed.
